On Saturday (January 23rd), the Gryphons Nordic Ski team raced at Monora Park, Orangeville, in the annual Mono Nordic Invitational race. The conditions for racing were outstanding, with warm weather and sunny skies throughout the day. Mono Nordic is the 2010 site of the OUA Championships hosted by the University of Guelph from February 19th-21st. As a result, the Mono invitational provided an excellent opportunity for skiers to get to know the course.
The senior men’s race was a 10km thriller, with close results and strong performances by all members of the Gryphon team. Matti Little took an early lead and never looked back, winning the race by 54 seconds. Ian Ritchie and Henry Reich (University of Waterloo) had a very close race, and ended up finishing in the same time, tying for 2nd. In the junior men’s race, Scott Weersink had a solid showing, taking home a silver medal.
As expected, the open women’s race was extremely close. Guelph dominated the race, sweeping the top four spots, and 6 of the top 7 spots. Laura Hewitt carried her success from last weekend’s races to another victory, finishing the 7km course in 21:47. In the junior women’s race, Jennie Hissa and Gillian Rockwell finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
